In a remote valley of Phobjikha in the small nation of Bhutan nestled deep into the Himalayas, 16-year-old teenager Sangay lives with her widowed father who is a popular craftsman of traditional and symbolic wooden phalluses. Sangay is not happy with her life and opposes her dad and everybody at school. She feels trapped within the vastness of the valley, surrounded only by villagers that live by their beliefs and symbols. That is until the day her father discovers her relationship with a married man, the town butcher, from the lowest caste of the village. As she attempts to come of age in a society dominated by repressive men, Sangay is driven slowly into madness and fights back, releasing her pent-up emotions.
