Rakesh and Ganesh have the sea in their veins. The sea is their mother, their lineage, and she gave them identity, food and sustenance. Both are Kolis, the indigenous fisherfolk of Bombay. Rakesh inherited a boat and knowledge of fishing from his father and as a traditional Koli fisherman he fishes only in shallow water of the sea. Ganesh is Rakesh’s bosom buddy. After completing his studies abroad, he returned to Bombay and started deep-sea fishing, and he wants to transform the Koli fishing community. Rakesh and Ganesh’s stories begin on extreme ends of a spectrum, but as the film’s narrative progresses, we begin to see that their lives and challenges are quite alike – the sea exerts herself in every aspect of their lives and their choices are limited.

We acknowledge the continuing connection to land, waters and communities. We also pay our respects to Elders, past and present. We recognise the integral role Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and First Nations peoples continue to play in storytelling and celebration spaces.
