Takehiko Inoue was born in 1967 in Kagoshima Prefecture. In 1988, he was selected for the 35th Tezuka Award with Kaede Purple and made his debut as a manga artist.

From 1990 to 1996, Slam Dunk was serialised in Weekly Shonen Jump, becoming an unprecedented hit and causing a social phenomenon. Other serialised works include Chameleon Jail (1989), Buzzer Beater (1997-1998), Vagabond (1998-) and Real (1999-).

Inoue made his film debut as writer-director with The First Slam Dunk (2022).
