Tato Kotetishvili was born in the Georgian capital Tbilisi and studied at the Polish National Film School in Lodz. Currently Tato lives in Tbilisi and works as cinematographer and director on feature films, documentaries and commercials.

His short film Watermelon won Best Polish Short at the 2012 Krakow International Film Festival, Best Short at the 2012 Batumi International Film Festival, Best Film at the 2017 Brno Short Film Festival, and Best Short at the 2017 Tbilisi International Film Festival, and was nominated for Golden Horseman (Dresden FF). Ogasavara (2015), also short, screened at International Film Festival Rotterdam. 

His debut feature film Holy Electricity premiered at the 2024 Locarno Film Festival, where it won the Golden Leopard – Filmmakers of the Present and the Second Junior Jury Award.
