Bi Gan is a filmmaker and poet, hailed as one to watch following the 2015 premiere of his first feature Kaili Blues. Born in 1989, his film is the first to ever shoot in his home region of Kaili in the Guizhou Province. It has toured more than 40 film festivals, garnering critical acclaim and earning top honours at the Locarno International Film Festival and both the FIPRESCI Prize and Best New Director Award at Taiwan’s prestigious 2015 Golden Horse Awards. Bi is a self-taught filmmaker, developing his craft by watching and absorbing thousands of movies. During college, Bi made short films Tiger (2011) and The Poet and the Singer (2012), both earning recognition at Nanjing’s China Independent Film Festival.
