Yusuf is quiet and reserved, keeping to himself and preferring to be left alone with his pet pigeons on the rooftop of the apartment building he shares with his brother and sister. The birds are his lone connection to his late father with Yusuf tending to the birds day and night, housing them in coops on the rooftop of their home in the slums of Adama. Yusuf also sleeps on the roof where he pays particular attention to his favourite, Maverdi, an outcast from the other pigeons. When his brother demands he get a job, Yusuf is sent away on a days-long journey. In fear of his pigeons’ safety, he must make his way back to Adama.
