OFFICIAL OPENING followed by Industry Panel and Film Screening of TIGER STRIPES

The recent international success of Inside the Yellow Cocoon Shell (Vietnam, Singapore, France, Spain) and Tiger Stripes (Malaysia, Taiwan, Singapore, France, Germany, Netherlands, Indonesia, Qatar) have brought South East Asia into the spotlight. Hear from those working in the region about the current state of filmmaking and the emerging voices showcasing South East Asia to the world.

The panel will be followed by the opening night screening of a nominated film from this year’s Asia Pacific Screen Awards.

  • Yeo Yann Yann (Malaysia) Performer
    Yeo Yann Yann is an award-winning theatre, television and film actress. APSA International Jury member. Most recently appearing in Disney’s American Born Chinese and action feature Havoc opposite Tom Hardy and Forest Whitaker.
  • Fran Borgia (Spain/Singapore) Producer
    Fran Borgia is a Spanish film producer based in Singapore. He is the founder of film production company Akanga Film Asia. Fran Borgia most recent credits include Kamila Andini’s Yuni (Toronto 2021 – Platform Prize Winner), Jow Zhi Wei’s Tomorrow is a Long Time (Berlinale Generation 2023), Amanda Nell Eu’s Tiger Stripes (Cannes Critics’ Week 2023 – Grand Prize Winner), and Chia Chee Sum’s Oasis of Now (Busan New Currents 2023).
  • Nicole Midori Woodford (Singapore) Director, Writer 
    Nicole Midori Woodford is an alumna of Berlinale Talents, Asian Film Academy, Torino Film Lab and Talents Tokyo. Her debut feature film Last Shadow at First Light, shot in both Singapore and Japan was selected to compete in San Sebastián Film Festival’s New Directors competition in 2023, and is nominated for Best Screenplay and Best Performance at APSA 2023. She is also one of the director-writers for the second season of the acclaimed HBO Asia series Folklore 2. 
  • Moderated by Aven Yap (Australia) Producer, Development Executive
    Aven Yap (@herroavena) is a classical pianist turned filmmaker. Born in Malaysia and raised in Brisbane, Aven has worked across a diverse slate of projects spanning Asia and Australia. Aven works with Emmy® and BAFTA Award-winning production company Hoodlum Entertainment as their Story Development Executive.

The panel will be followed by a screening of Cannes Critics Week Prize winning and APSA Best Youth nominated film, TIGER STRIPES (95 minutes, Malaysia, Taiwan, Singapore, Indonesia, Qatar, France, Netherlands, Germany), directed by Amanda Nell Eu and produced by Foo Fei Ling, Patrick Mao Huang, Fran Borgia, Juliette Lepoutre, Pierre Menahem, Jonas Weydemann, Ellen Havenith, Yulia Evina Bhara.

The first amongst her friends to hit puberty, Zaffan, 12, discovers a terrifying secret about her body. Ostracised by her community, Zaffan fights back, learning that to be free she must embrace the body she feared, emerging as a proud, strong woman.
