Film Synopsis

An exploration of the Japanese concept of ‘mitoru’, the act of watching over or accompanying a dying person until their death, Journey to the Shore is a love story that challenges usual conceptions of life, death and half-life. Mizuki’s husband Yusuke drowned at sea and when the deceased suddenly appears at home, she’s not surprised. Instead, she wonders what took him so long. She agrees to let Yusuke take her on a journey, showing her beautiful places in the Japanese countryside that hold importance in Yusuke’s life, before finally returning to the place of his death. On their journey the couple, who are slowly rekindling their relationship, meet other people who, like Yusuke, are transitioning between life and death.
