Chi is living her American dream after years of study when news of her grandmother’s death in Taiwan sends her back to the family home on Happiness Road. Overcome by a wave of nostalgia that her return facilitates, Chi starts to contemplate the meaning of life, home and happiness. Most importantly, will Chi find her own happiness? Sung Hsin-Yin’s film is inspired by her own rite of passage including parental expectations, fear of having children and the reality of childhood dreams, which are placed against the backdrop of 40 turbulent years of social, political and cultural upheaval in the history of her Taiwan homeland. What does a girl who believes in the fairy-tale endings of cartoon princesses become when she learns the reality of happy endings?
