Lee Joon-dong and Lee Chang-dong have won the Asia Pacific Screen Awards (APSA) Jury Grand Prize for Burning (Republic of Korea).
The win adds to their collection of APSA Awards, the region’s highest accolade in film. Both previously won Best Feature Film for Miryang (2007) and were nominated together for Shi (2010) and Burning. Alongside his win for Miryang, Chang-dong has also won Best Children’s Feature Film for Ye Haeng Ja (2009), Achievement in Directing for Shi and Best Youth Feature Film for Woorideul (2016). Lee’s three winning APSA vessels appeared on the set of the character Ben’s (Steven Yeun) apartment in Burning.
The Award was accepted by Burning screenwriter Oh Jung-mi, who travelled to Brisbane for the glittering ceremony. The screenplay for Burning, adapted from a short story by Haruki Murakami, was initially developed by writers Lee Chang-dong and Oh Jung-mi with a grant from APSA’s long-running Academy partnership with the Motion Picture Association (MPA) through the MPA APSA Academy Film Fund.
Kore-eda Hirokazu’s Shoplifters (Manbiki Kazoku) was named Best Feature Film, the Cultural Diversity Award under the Patronage of UNESCO was awarded to Garin Nugroho and Ifa Isfansyah for Memories of My Body (Kucumbu Tubuh Indahku) (Indonesia). Nadine Labaki won the Achievement in Directing award for Capharnaüm (Lebanon) and Best Screenplay was awarded to Dan Kleinman and Sameh Zoabi for Tel Aviv on Fire (Israel, Belgium, France, Luxembourg).
Winners in the feature fiction categories were determined by the APSA International Jury, comprised of Jury President Alexander Rodnyansky (Russian Federation), Nia Dinata (Indonesia), Deepak Rauniyar (Nepal), Vladimer Katcharava (Georgia) and Antonia Zegers (Chile).
The Asia Pacific Screen Awards, the region’s highest accolade in film, honour cinematic excellence and the cultural diversity of the world’s fastest-growing film region; comprising 70 countries and areas, 4.5 billion people and responsible for half of the world’s film output. In 2018, 46 films from 22 countries and areas of the Asia Pacific region received APSA nominations, including the first nomination for a film from Uzbekistan.
APSA International Jury President, Russian producer of 2014 APSA Best Feature Film winner Leviathan, Alexander Rodnyansky said “We have had the great fortune to be presented with a unique line up of films that represent the different countries, cultures and talents of our region. It’s a huge and very rare opportunity to learn and understand so much about other people’s lives and I have discovered new worlds by watching them.”

<버닝>의 오정미 작가가 브리스번에서 열린 아시아태평양영화상 시상식에 참석하여 대리수상 하였습니다. 무라카미 하루키의 단편 소설을 각색한 이 영화는 초기에 이창동 감독과 오정미 작가가 공동 집필하였으며, APSA의 오랜 동반자인 영화협회 (Motion Picture Association)의 MPA APSA 아카데미 펀드에서 자금을 지원하였습니다.
고레에다 히로카즈 감독의 <샵리프터스> (만비키 가족)은 최우수 작품상을 받았으며, 유네스코 후원 문화다양성 상은 <내 몸의 기억들>의 가린 누그로호와 이파 이스판샤에게 돌아갔습니다. 나딘 라바키는 <가버나움> (레바논)으로 감독상을 수상하였으며, <텔 아비브 온 파이어>의 댄 클레인만과 사메 조아비가 최우수 각본상을 받았습니다.
픽션영화 부분의 수상작들은 APSA 국제심사위원단에 의해 선정되었습니다. 심사위원단은 알렉산더 로드니안스키 (러시아)를 필두로 니아 디나타 (인도네시아), 디팍 라니야르 (네팔), 블라디메르 카차바 (조지아) 및 안토니아 제러스 (칠레)로 구성되었습니다.
